Oregon is one of the nation’s healthiest states when it comes to childhood obesity. Currently, 26.4 percent of children ages 10-17 in Oregon are considered overweight or obese. While this is better than all but a handful of states, it is still too high for the children of Oregon. To address the issue, more than 340 schools have joined the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools Program and are taking advantage of tools and resources available at no cost to help schools create a wellness council, start staff wellness programs, offer healthier foods and more physical activities.
The Healthy Schools Program recognizes that all schools are unique and there is no one size fits all approach when it comes to school health. As part of the Healthy Schools Program, every school creates an action plan that will work for their community. Many schools in Oregon have decided to work on employee wellness and 75 percent of participating schools have made improvements in this area.
In recognition of their efforts, many National Healthy Schools Awards have been presented to Oregon schools. In 2014, St. Paul Elementary was the only Oregon school that received the National Healthy School Bronze Award. Each recognized school has distinguished itself with healthy eating and physical activity programs and policies that meet or exceed stringent standards set by the Alliance’s Healthy Schools Program. These programs and policies include:
Physical Fitness Education
Health Education
Teacher/Parent/Staff Fitness Friday Challenges
Employee Wellness after school activities
National School Lunch Program
We are continuing to strive towards a healthier environment for our students and this year we are hoping to receive the National Healthy School Silver Award!

HEALTHY SNACKS AND STAYING ACTIVE!
Snacks are an important part of every students day at school. It fuels their brain for all of the information they learn throughout the day and gives them the energy to make it through their busy day. Making sure our students and children have a nutritious snack is quite important, so here are some ideas in case you need to switch things up...
Fruit (apples, grapes, berries, melons, pears, fruit cups, apple sauce, oranges, etc.)
Vegetables (carrots, celery, pea pods, cucumbers, etc.)
Crackers, meat, and cheese
Cheese sticks
Yogurt (or you can try pairing yogurt with fruit or granola to make it more filling)
Nuts (almonds and raisins, peanuts, trail mix, cashews, etc.)
Cereal (dry cereal makes for a great snack)
Apples and Peanut Butter or celery and peanut butter
Granola bars
Pretzels and snack crackers
Many of these things come in snack sizes too, so they are quick and easy to throw in for those busy mornings at home!
Things to avoid:
Whole bags of chips
Candy
Cake, donuts, etc.
Being physically active outside of school is also very important. After being in school all day its important to make sure your child is getting some exercise at home. This can be as simple as playing with the dog outside, playing with their siblings or neighbors, riding bikes, jumping on the trampoline, playing tag, or running around the yard. There are also many different kinds of sports teams for young children through Chehalem Parks and Recreation if you are interested in something more structured.
Part of earning the National Healthy School Silver Award is eating healthy and staying active so keep doing your part and we will reach our goal!!
